The Met Gala or Met Ball is the most anticipated night of fashion every year. The first Monday in May has become an iconic statement for fashion’s biggest night out. But it is so much more than that…

Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Institute in New York, the Gala holds as a fundraiser for the art museum. Bringing everyone together, the Vogue team curate a list of everyone that is hot right now. From A-list celebs to fashion icons, we often see the likes of the Hadid sisters, Rhianna and Kim Kardashian. Year after year the remarkable event raises 8 figures, with the 2019 ball raising an incredible £12 million! The Met is organised by the one and only Anna Wintour and has become a beloved celebration of fashion.
While no one knows what happens inside the ball, once the celebs step off the red carpet. We all anticipate watching the glamorous stars looks appear alongside their designers. These are truly one-of-a-kind garments we witness, as the designer and chosen muse work on the piece together leading up to the prestigious ball. This year will be the 74th year of the Met Gala and marks the first back to normal Met Gala since the pandemic struck.

Andrew Bolton is the Costume Institute’s head keeper. He works with his team to create a cinematic experience within the gallery that dictates the theme of the year. The yearly themes ensure designers get creative with their A-lister clients to produce distinctive couture garments.
The 2022 Met Gala picks up where last year’s event left off. Celebrating the second volume in the two-part Costumer series Exhibition of American Cinema. With the Met Gala 2020 being cancelled due to the unexpected COVID 19 pandemic, the Institute announced there would be a two-part interpretation occurring in 2021 and 2022. We saw the Met Gala last year take place in September, just 8 months ago due to the pandemic restrictions. Which followed the theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. This year the exclusive event returns to its rightful First Monday in May, hosting the second part of the theme: “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. Bolton is hoping to focus on inclusivity in fashion and leaving us with the question ‘Who gets to be an American?’ in this year’s exciting part two. It was also recently announced that the direction of this year’s theme will be, Glided Glamour.
The hosts of the 2022 ball have finally been announced. As last year we saw a very Gen Z friendly panel after the event even invited Tik-Tok stars causing some controversy online. Posing us with the difficult question: do we accept Tik-Tok stars as A-List celebrities now?
Who would you like to see as this year’s co-chairs? On March 17th Vogue announced its 2022 hosts include the most iconic pair, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds along with Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda who will all officially serve as the evenings co-chairs. While of course, we will see Dame Anna Wintour and Tom Ford continue their place as honorary co-chairs.

As the biggest night of the fashion calendar, the event usually hosts around 600 attendees pre-covid times. Although heavily considered, the secret guest list is never revealed until the evening before the event. However, we can assume the A-listers that are renowned for attending each year, such as Kim Kardashian, JLO and of course the alleged designers who arrive with their muse. Last year we did in fact witness some entirely new guests including Megan Fox and Billie Eilish. In keeping with portraying last year’s theme, we can expect some jaw-dropping American talent. Finger’s crossed 2022 will be the year we see Kylie Jenner and Zendaya return to the royal red carpet of the year.
Those who don’t make the cut for the guest list can pay up to £24,000 each for a ticket!
The event is streamed live to the public on Vogue across their digital platforms, including Instagram and Twitter. The stream will start at 6pm ET (10pm GMT).
