Thea Green on being appointed an MBE and the creation of nails inc

This month, in honour of International Womens Day, Cohorted are championing leading #FemaleFounders in the industry. Throughout the month of March, we are bringing you exclusive content from the leading ladies themselves.

Our female founders series will discuss how brands were founded, the personal journeys of these inspirational women and sharing advice that will empower younger woman on their career paths.

First up in our #FemaleFounders series is Nails INC founder Thea Green, whos desire to create a product line that was high quality and on trend has proven popular to consumers.

Don’t worry, we wouldn’t just tease you because featured in our March FemaleFounders Beauty Box is the Nails INC Just Kinda Bliss Nail Polish Duo, guaranteed to up your nail game…

1. Can you tell us about the startup of Nails Inc and what brought this to life, do you remember the process and how you felt at the time?

Of course! It was 1999, I was working as a Fashion editor at Tatler magazine and frequently travelled to NYC. I was inspired by nail bars, but didn’t see a brand or a product range that worked hand-in-hand with the service. I wanted to create a professional grade product with a strong fashion background, so that it was high quality, but totally on trend and flattering. I wanted a product line with real results, but one that was quick and easy to use for busy, time-poor consumers with high expectations.

"Innovation and great people. Great people and innovation. Repeat, repeat."

2. Since launching Nails Inc in 1999 what has been your proudest moment for the brand so far?

There are so many! I’m proud of our team particularly at the moment – they are so creative, nimble and innovative. With salons closed, we have to be reactive to what our consumers’ product needs are, to create their only salon at home.

I am proud that after many years, we still remain at the forefront of innovation, be it our newly launched most natural vegan Plant Power polish range, or our bestselling NailKale Superfood base coat, which treats all nail types and is a real hero.

I get excited by our long-standing retailer relationships and by the ever-changing environment and new distribution points.

3. What was your initial reaction when being appointed for an MBE?

Ah, I thought it was my husband playing a practical joke on me, as that’s exactly what he would do!

It was amazing. A true honour to be awarded it, and from the Queen herself! Which has to be the ultimate experience, it was great to celebrate with my family and thank them for all the support they have given me – it takes an army.

Sometimes you just need some light relief, a glass of wine and deal with it again tomorrow.

4. How do you find the right balance between work and home life?

Let me know if you find it! No seriously I thrive in all chaos… but organised chaos, of course.

I think you accept that you spin the plates as best you can and try not to beat yourself up about the ones you drop. I try to be very organised, and my life is made up of to-do lists. But I love being busy, and as long as you accept the failures along with successes, you can do it all, and it makes for one exciting life. I believe my kids benefit from having to be a little bit independent, whilst also knowing that I will always catch them if they fall and they are of course my ultimate priority – but Mummy does have to go to work! I have learnt to pause and work out what, or who rather, needs me most and be adaptable, and above all, don’t sweat the small stuff.

5. Being a mother of three yourself, what advice would you give to other women struggling to find a balance between parenthood & their career?

It’s really tough and I don’t have all the answers, but I love it and I won’t pick between a family or a career. It gets easier as the kids get older, so just keep going and you will find the routine that works for you, also as soon as you can, ask your kids what they want and need from you, get them to tell you what’s important. It’s often just a little 1-1 time and not for you to be doing it all.

6. As a successful businesswoman and trailblazer in the industry what is it that motivates you?

Innovation and great people. Great people and innovation. Repeat, repeat.

7. Who do you go to for advice?

My CFO gives great advice and he is a good support – if we can’t solve it, we laugh our way through! Sometimes you just need some light relief, a glass of wine and deal with it again tomorrow.

8. Over your years in the industry what do you think have been the best and worst nail trends?

Actually, I just love trends and I can always see the appeal and why customers like them. I thrive on innovation, but love it when it’s flattering and chic too.

9. If you could only wear one nail colour for the rest of your life what would it be?

Ahhhh that’s impossible, can I have a few for different reasons?

Mother Earth’s Calling – from our Plant Power polish range – it’s a popping green that goes with everything, it’s also vegan, 21 free and best of all, 73% plant powered.

Find Me in Fulham – just the go-to best white polish, and it’s in our 45 Second Speedy Gloss range, so it’s perfect for when I’m in a rush, which is pretty much all the time.

Black leather polish – it’s a classic, this is one that we’re relaunching and I’m really excited about, but it has always been in my make-up bag. Watch this space!

10. Who is your ultimate female inspiration and why?

My mum: she is the kindest person I know.
