Here is the beginners guide to get you started on how crystals work and what they do, as well as a reading list to carry on learning about their healing powers and benefits…
Many of us have associated crystals with our funky aunt who travels the world doing yoga retreats, bringing exotic and cultural presents back without ever really knowing what they do. Crystals have been cherished by humans for thousands of years, from the Aztecs to Ayurvedic doctors believing in their healing powers. There is no denying their newfound and widespread popularity, with crystals making an appearance in Kylie Jenner’s Instagram feed, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion shows, and even Adele revealing that she holds crystals in her palms while performing on stage.
So here is the beginners guide to get you started on how crystals work and what they do, as well as a reading list to carry on learning about their healing powers and benefits. So, without a further ado, let’s get to it!
While there are no legitimate studies to confirm that crystals have healing powers, or emit vibrations that affect your mind and body, there are some stones that can conduct energy. These have often been used in modern technology such as TV screens, satellites, and even phones! It is believed that by holding crystals or placing them on your body, they can promote physical, emotional and spiritual healing. It is said that crystals do this by interacting positively with your body’s energy field or chakra. Different crystals have different healing qualities, with some said to alleviate stress and others to improve creativity and concentration.
If you’re unsure about where to start, the best way to begin is by picking one you like – whether you like the cool shape, bright colour or it’s simply super pretty. Pick it up and you’re ready to start. Touching and feeling a crystal can really help you decide what to pick and the energy from it may resonate with you. Don’t choose a crystal simply because of its given qualities or because someone recommended it; what might work for someone else might not work for you.

It’s recommended to cleanse your crystals as soon as you’ve purchased it as it may have previous energy stored in it. To do so you can hold the crystals under running water or soak them in salt water and them place them – ideally outside – overnight under the moonlight or during the day in the sunlight to “charge” them. Because crystals absorb negative energy they should be cleaned regularly, typically once a month.
Crystals work with the energy centers in the body, i.e. your chakras, to remove negative energy, blockages of energy and help heal the body, mind and spirit. Energy drastically influences your health, therefore wearing jewellery with crystals such as bracelets, rings and necklaces can improve your energy throughout the day and allow you to lead a healthier and happier life.
