Happy International Yoga Day! Celebrated on the 21st June every year, this day honours the importance of yoga in everyday life. 

Having started in India centuries ago, yoga has become a popular form of exercise and meditation all around the world – especially in the West – and it’s well-renowned for its principles, as well as its physical and mental benefits. Many people practice yoga to get closer to spirituality, enlightenment and inner peace, but overall, yoga is really good for your health. 

We know that now more than ever, we need all the help we can to ensure our wellbeing isn’t being forgotten about. With more time on our hands, it’s about finding new opportunities – have you been considering yoga for a while, but haven’t found a good time to start? Now is the perfect time. If you need a little more persuading, here are some of the benefits yoga has on mental and physical wellbeing… 

Yoga calms the mind. 

Yoga impacts the chemical imbalance in the brain, helping to ‘reset’ it and taking it to a calmer and collected state. This is good if you are prone to stress or live a very hectic lifestyle, where you’re on the go constantly and need to find a way to ground yourself. Also, not only does yoga calm the mind, but it sharpens it as well aincreasing mental agility. 

Yoga boosts your strength. 

Yoga strengthens your body, especially your joints, spine and muscles, giving you much more physical power. It also enhances athletic performance, but even if you aren’t an athlete, taking part in a yoga class on a regular basis will help improve your strength as you go about your daily life. 

Yoga adjusts your posture. 

Because yoga involves a lot of stretching, you will notice a change in your posture for the better. Yoga improves your posture and straightens out your spine so you can tune into your body and correct yourself when you feel as though you’re out of line.

Yoga reduces fatigue by increasing energy, like any form of exercise. Even if you feel tired at the end of the day, a dose of yoga can pick you right up and get you going for the evening.

Yoga is so empowering. It can help you to feel good about yourself and it can help you to achieve higher levels of self-esteem. The more you practice, the more results you will see – this is a basic way to help motivate yourself, by seeing the results.

Yoga relieves stress, makes you more mindful of who you are and makes you consider what your mind and body needs. It connects you with your inner self and takes you to a calmer state of being, so if you practice yoga regularly, you are more likely to feel much more at peace over time. You are also likely to feel much more content, experience a boost in your mood and you may even experience an improvement in the quality of your life.
