Wellbeing Tips for Those With Anxiety

There will never be one single thing that works for everybody with anxiety. It can affect us all so differently, but whatever your experience; it matters and you matter.

We have all been left feeling helpless at some point with our anxiety, wondering if we will ever think normally or if our thoughts will ever slow down. Sound familiar?  

Anxiety can affect our lives in so many ways, but we should never be left feeling hopeless, not in control of our minds, or letting the physical effects get out of hand. Therapy is not for everyone, so I hope these tips help you if you’re struggling.


One way to take back control from your anxious thoughts is to journal daily. I know this sounds overwhelming, but it can be something you do for just 2 minutes a day! Simply set your phone timer to whatever feels comfortable, I use 3 minutes and just begin writing down whatever is on my mind. You can doodle, make notes, write line by line. Get everything out of your mind onto paper. This really allows you to clear your mind and sometimes can even spark a realisation – as you continue to write you can see why something was bothering you so much.

Dedicated thinking time

Sometimes (or all the time) it can feel like your brain is never quiet, going at 100mph every second of the day. As soon as you feel these overwhelming thoughts creeping up, simply tell yourself you will think about this in your dedicated thinking time. Set yourself a time, whatever suits you best (I choose 4pm after work) and sit with, or even journal/mind map, your thoughts. This helps these niggly thoughts not bother you all day long, as you know you will get to them eventually.

Meditation or Yoga

Staying consistent with meditation can change your life. It allows you to take control of your mind and go forward thinking positively. There are no rules to meditation, you can meditate for as little as 2-5 minutes or half an hour, whatever feels comfortable to you! For beginners, a good way to ease yourself in is yoga. These practices take time so be patient with yourself and enjoy the process.

Reading self-help books

Self-help books teach you so much; they helped me understand myself. They have the power to just transform you into a whole better version of yourself, help you understand your anxiety and how to deal with it in day-to-day life and in the long term. A fantastic author is Vex King, who has two incredible books out that changed my life.

Remember, anxiety doesn’t have to control your life. Take that control back now and start living. Begin to recognise your triggers, and remember that you have anxiety, so don’t be so hard on yourself! Take a break when you need to, go do something you enjoy – from a walk to a drive to Starbucks. Most importantly, give yourself a break.
