Still Single? How About Some Self Love Instead?

Being single could be the best thing that’s ever happened to you.

Sure, being in a relationship has its perks, but so does being single. Your 20’s are all about finding yourself, figuring out what you want and spreading your wings. You can unapologetically focus on you. It’s also a lot easier to love someone else when you’re confident and proud of who you are as a person.

Being single could be the best thing that’s ever happened to you.

Firstly. Put down your phone and step away from those dating apps. It’s YOU time. Self-love doesn’t have to mean doing expensive things, but if you want to start by booking a spa day somewhere then please do. After all, it is Valentines and we’re treating ourselves. We deserve this. Although I’m just as happy slathering on my favourite face mask (I recommend: Rosy Cheeks or Oatifix from Lush), lighting some candles and getting in a hot bath. During this soak you can either think about nothing at all or start making a mental list of what you want to achieve in the coming months. Aim high and be ambitious. Don’t be scared to take a risk. If not now, then when?

If you can then vividly describe and write down your goals, and put them somewhere you can be reminded of them, then science says you are 1.4 times more likely to successfully accomplish them. It’s worth a shot.

Starting a new book can be a great way to expand your mind and improve your mood. Pick up whatever book takes your fancy. A good book should be able to transport us somewhere else for a while and an even better book should inspire! Recently I’ve been enjoying a more philosophical read (Walden by Henry David Thoreau, to be exact,) which has reignited my desire to travel and explore.

If you have the opportunity to solo travel, even just for a weekend, then take it! Not only will you feel so wonderfully independent but travelling is one of the best forms of education. And when I say ‘education’ I mean in a sense of educating ourselves about, well, ourselves and life. We can learn a lot from what is unfamiliar to us. Stepping into the unknown can seem daunting but it can be when we learn the most. You might just surprise yourself by taking the leap.

While you have the spare time, why not take up a new hobby? This can be anything from going to that yoga class you always wanted to join, starting a journal or learning a new instrument- it’s never too late. Life is too short to take a backseat. Becoming a pro-active person is only going to bring good things.

Once you learn to be happy and comfortable with your own company you’ll start seeing life from a whole new, more positive perspective.

Happy Valentines Day to Me, from Me.
