By following these tips, you’re guaranteed to have a more enjoyable and stress-free camping trip.
Camping is a great way to explore nature and save yourself some money while travelling. Initially camping can seem quite daunting and you may be reluctant to leave some of your home comforts behind. So I have compiled my best tips and tricks to make your camping experience one you won’t forget- for all the right reasons!
Firstly clothing. If you’re camping in the UK, during any season, it is going to get chilly at night. So invest in some thermals and layer up! A pair of tights under some leggings and socks should keep you nice and cosy. Also remember that a large amount of body heat is lost through your head so maybe think about wearing a hat at night as well.
A good sleeping bag will do wonders for your nights sleep but if you’re making do with what you already have then a thick blanket will work too. Bringing a thick camping mat and a pillow along will definitely have you sleeping like a log.
In the UK wild camping is only legal in Scotland, so you’ll be needing to look for campsites if you go elsewhere. However this means you will usually have access to proper showers and toilets which can only be a good thing. This brings me on to toiletries. To make sure you don’t create any unnecessary waste I highly recommend buying a Face Halo pad to wash your face. The pads special technology means you only need water to take off your make up and you can use it again and again. To wash your hair and body it’s a great idea to use small reusable bottles that you can fill up with your favourite products from home.
Onto food! When you’re cooking outside you don’t want food wrappers blowing off in the wind. Plus it’s always a good idea to avoid plastics. This is why I suggest using either tinned food or bringing containers with dried food in that you can refill for another time. You’ll be surprised at what meals you can create sticking to this. It is also a lot cheaper! If you’re going to be out walking all day in a remote area then make sure to pack lots of snacks. Foods high in protein and sugar are great for giving you an energy boost. Peanut butter is a good option but so is your favourite chocolate bar or sweets.
Even out in the wild you shouldn’t have to go without a cup of tea in the morning. So pack a kettle you can heat up on a gas stove along with a pan for some porridge in the morning. Investing in a portable gas stove is so useful for cooking outdoors but remember you’ll need to buy a small gas canister to use this. Having small lanterns in the tent and outside while you’re cooking will save having to use your phone touch and waste battery. Bringing a head torch will definitely come in handy.
Wherever you go make sure you pick up all of your rubbish and don’t leave anything behind that could harm the wildlife. After all, you’re there to enjoy it and it’s important that generations to come can have that same opportunity.
