We’ve all found solace in exercise this year, what with the world falling apart and all. So, now those darker nights are upon us and gyms could potentially close again – it looks like we’re sticking to those road runs and outdoor workouts.
This unfortunately means we’ll be battling whatever the wintery nights throw at us – including rain, wind and maybe even snow. Training in these conditions are not great for skin, so it’s essential we all take extra care.
Unsure where to start? Take a look at our guide below to ensure you keep your face fresh and skin silky smooth.
Stay hydrated
When the weather turns and we’re all a little colder, we often forget to drink enough water, but the low humidity can really strip our skin of moisture. Plus, if you’re going to be training, staying hydrated is essential So, keep your bottles full, sip throughout the day and if you’re struggling, jazz it up with a bit of lemon and ginger.
Shield your skin
SPF is essential in your daily facial routine – whatever the weather. It may not feel necessary in the colder months but it’s just as important, as you can still get sun damage through the rain and clouds. Using sunscreen can reduce fine lines, wrinkles and can lower our risk of skin cancer, so make sure you cover the face, neck and hands to be safe.
Exfoliate
On those colder nights, all you want to do is get in bed and exfoliating may be the last thing on your mind, but it boasts some essential benefits, especially during winter. Getting rid of dead, dry skin cells, exfoliating helps regenerate new ones. Opt for a natural scrub that’s gentle on the skin, but packed full of goodness to give you a nice glow.
Lather those lips
We all dread getting chapped lips in winter, but they’re hard to avoid, especially as the temperature drops. We have to protect them so lip balm is a must, especially when heading out for a run. Keep some in your pocket and your lips will thank you later.
Shorten those showers
I know, this is the last thing you want to do in winter – especially after a long, cold, outdoor workout, but steamy showers and long warm baths are a no-go. They dehydrate the body and strip away natural, necessary oils. When you come out of the shower a little itchy and irritated, it’s because you’ve overdone it.
Use a good moisturiser, and often.
You’ll be pretty covered up if you’re heading outside to exercise, but that doesn’t mean your skin is safe, sorry. Blisters and skin irritations are inevitable all year round, but factor in the cold weather and you’re in for some serious issues. A good moisturiser is a necessity and be sure to use it straight after washing.
Give some extra attention to your hands and feet, as they’re the most hardworking body parts during your workouts. Masks are also key, rejuvenating skin and adding that extra moisture back in.
