Self-care is something that is increasingly becoming more important in our day to day life. Taking the time out for yourself, working on your mental, emotional and physical health is something we should never overlook and learn to give ourselves time to practice it.
As much as ‘taking time away’ from technology can be part of ‘self-care’ routine, there are also a great deal of apps available that can help you practice self-care, that you can introduce into your life and routines. They are a great starting place for people who may feel overwhelmed with all the self-care practices and apps out there.
Headspace is an app that you can use to practice everyday mindfulness and meditation. Aimed to relieve stress, anxiety, focus and/or sleep, it’s a brilliant app to live a healthier and happier life. There’s a wide range of different breathing exercises and meditations, some of my favourite ones are morning meditation and breathing exercises to reduce stress. It’s such an easy and friendly interface to use as well, that you don’t feel overwhelmed when opening the app; It’s easy to find an exercise that suits your need.
Grateful app is a gratitude journal, which is designed to help you reflect and give thanks to your day to day. I personally find practicing gratitude an important thing for self-care, as it’s a positive way to act and reflect on not only the small, but the big things in life, learning to be more thankful every day. It’s got a simple design which again is important, and it also gives you prompts to remind you to write in the app. However, you also don’t need to feel pressured into using it either; it’s there to be easy and fun rather than something to build pressure around.
Motivation – Daily Quotes
I love a good quote; sometimes other people can put positivity in a much better way than I do. Whether you feel in a bit of a slump or need a bit of motivation, these daily quotes are a powerful mechanism for mental self-care and growth.
A similar app to ‘Grateful’ is Reflectly, another daily journal which allows you to journal your everyday thoughts. It also enables you to do deal with them and encourages you to turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. There’s also a mood tracker, so you can see and journal your moods and it also prompts you with personalised motivations to match your moods.
People usually flick or choose between Headspace and Calm; I personally use Calm as an app specifically for sleep, rather than meditation. It’s got an incredible backlog of lullabies, piano music and sleep stories that are designed to bring calmness for sleep. There are of course still meditation practices on the app as well to support listeners through tough moments.
