Nope. This one’s a myth that dates back to secondary school, with children everywhere convinced that shaving needed doing at least 3 times a day to avoid embarrassment. You might have thought or heard this particularly if you’re a darker-haired woman because your body hair stands out more than someone with fair hair, but it’s strictly untrue. Shaving your legs, face, arms or anywhere else doesn’t encourage the hair to grow back any differently; it simply looks thicker or darker because the new hairs growing through are all the same length, making them look denser on your skin. If you’re pale-skinned with dark hair, you might think your hair’s growing back quicker because it stands out more, but trust us, it isn’t.
Myth #2: Toothpaste can help reduce redness and dry out your spots
While some toothpastes do contain zinc, which can help provide anti-inflammatory and drying qualities to your skin, many more also contain ingredients like fluorine and menthol, which can actually make your skin worse. Ignore what every American tv sitcom has taught you from the beginning of time; toothpaste on your spots won’t cure them in time for that big work meeting, and it could lead to even bigger breakouts or increased redness – not what you want. Instead, try tea tree oil mixed with water and dab it gently on your spot once or twice a day, or moisturise daily with aloe vera to keep your skin healthy.
Myth #3: Sweat is fat crying; it means you’re working hard
Sorry, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but sweat doesn’t mean you’re burning more calories or that you’re going to get that perfect figure quicker. Sweat is your body’s way of cooling down, like natural air conditioning, and it only expels water and electrolytes from your body, not toxins, fat or anything else. Unfortunately, this means that you’re not losing weight every time you’re sweating – you’re probably just dehydrated. The good news is, if you’ve been stressed out because you don’t sweat as much as your pal who does intense cardio when you’re lifting weights, doing yoga or working out in another way, you can stop the worrying. Your body’s still burning fat no matter what type of workout you’re doing, so keep at it and you’ll have that dream bod in no time.
Myth #4: Washing your hair every day will make it look worse or put it in bad condition
Another childhood myth debunked right here. If you’re someone with particularly oily or greasy hair, you’ve probably been told not to wash it every day, because it’ll only make it worse. Well folks, this one’s wrong too. Greasy hair isn’t caused by over-washing or using conditioner; it happens when your body produces too much of its natural oil, sebum. There’s no way to prevent this, so the best advice we can give is that you wash your hair in the same way you wash the rest of you; regularly, and whenever you feel it’s needed. We’d recommend every few days, to avoid a build-up of bacteria. No longer do you need to worry about dry shampooing within an inch of your life because you washed your hair yesterday and are trying to “train it”. However, it’s worth looking at the different types of shampoo and conditioner available to get one to suit your hair type. Then, use it as much as you like.
