How to Transform Your Space for Autumn

With a surprising September heatwave notwithstanding, it’s safe to say that autumn, and with it the cold, is on its way. Shorter days have leaves changing colours and, of course, Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte returning to the menu – this seasonal trinity has us looking forward to toasty jumper moments and the most festive time of year 

But before you put on your beloved Christmas playlist or dig out that sequin-bedazzled knit, let’s take a moment to get your favourite spaces ready for some cosy nights in. From switching up the colour palette in your living room to introducing mood lighting to your current home office set-up, we’ve put together a simple guide to transform your home this autumn. Here’s how to welcome the new season in style…   

Texture & Colour 

Changing up wallpapers or repainting walls every few months just doesn’t make sense; nor is it sustainable or cheap. So, how do you get a room feeling autumnal without having to overhaul your entire décor? The answer: accessories in seasonally appropriate shades and textures that will instantly add depth and help create a welcoming vibe. Think plush velvet and chenille cushions, waffle knit throwswool blankets in earthy hueswoven baskets and buttery soft leather accents 

Compliment your rooms with wreaths in suitably warm tones of rust and caramel and (because who can resist?) pumpkins, real or otherwise. Foliage bursting with vibrant yellows and deep oranges, which you can add to vases or mix in with greener plants, are an equally easy upgrade for when sweater weather becomes the official moodTo finish, consider artfully scattered conkers or acorns for a room that’s guaranteed to shout, ‘autumn’s here’.  


If you’re anything like me, you’ll love a candle (or ten…) and there’s really no quicker way to set the seasonal mood. For autumn, it’s all about heady aromas that evoke cherished memories of holidays gone by (gingerbread anyone?) and fragrances that’lconjure up a sense of comfort and calm. If you’re craving a little sophistication, opt for crisp notes such as pear, quince, orange and bergamot or woody scents including cedar, oak and sandalwood. Ylang ylang, oud, tobacco, musk and amber will complement these perfectly while bringing velvety richness; pine and jasmine are ideal if you prefer a lighter, cleaner finish.  

Alternatively, you could always take your cues from the world of baking. Look for candles swirled with luscious scents of cinnamon, apple, ginger, figsweet vanilla and of course, spiced pumpkinIf candles aren’t for youdiffusers blended with these essences will work just as well and will have you embracing autumn’s darkening days in no time. 

Ambient Lighting  

While bright lights are great for opening up a space and creating an airy feel, when it comes to autumn, it’s all about mirroring the deepening sky outside. Swapping your current switch for a dimmer is one option, while substituting warm whites and yellows for more cool-toned bulbs will make for an effective transformation too. Easier stillstring lights draped prettily on shelves or strung across windows will help establish soft moodiness. Try turning off ceiling lights in the evenings in favour of floor lampsindoor lanterns and wall sconces, all of which will help bathe rooms in a dreamy, gentle glowTake the autumnal atmosphere up a notch with flickering candles and a roaring fire; before you know it, you’ll be set to watch Home Alone on repeat, hot chocolate and mince pies to hand.
