Be Your Own Hype Man

I think we can happily say that the discussion of Mental Health is more encouraged and widely spread than around 10+ years ago. A large part of promoting a positive mindset, whether it be for yourself or others, is to surround yourself with kind, likeminded people in times of need. Some may favour chanting ‘love yourself’ like a mantra, as unfortunately we often have to be reminded to do so. 

But what about when others really can’t be there for us? – This is what I want to discuss today, as I feel like it’s not mentioned or considered near enough as much as it should be. 

We all have our roles and responsibilities that in some cases can – without avoidance – take priority over the importance of maintaining our relationships. So, in those instances, no one can stand by your side when you’ve fallen or when you have something to exclaim in pride. For some, it’s quite the opposite. We have someone/people around us, yet they aren’t as supportive as you wish they would be… This is whyou need to learn to be your own Hype Man/Woman! 

Got a new job? – Celebrate that. 

Finished your coursework? – Reward yourself. 

Managed to lose or gain weight as you wanted? – Be proud. 

Got out of bed when you felt depressed? – Be pleased with yourself. 

Learnt a new skill? – Show it off! 

 

I too, need to praise myself more. For a fraction of our lives, whether it be the odd day here or there or for months on end, others will be focusing on their own achievements and can’t always commend you for yours. 

The absence of others doesn’t mean your achievements should go uncelebrated.

Today, I’d like to emphasise why self-love is so important and why said motto has been ingrained in the forefront of my conscious. With all this said, how have I been incorporating this ‘Hype Woman’ attitude in my daily life? 

One example that I remember distinctly was a time when I had to review a skincare product via video (I’m a skincare Blogger if you weren’t aware). Usually, I’m much more comfortable being behind the camera, not visible to the audience. I kept reassuring myself with the phrases such as: ‘you can do this… you know what you’re talking about…prove yourself and haters wrong’ (and yes, it seems weird but becomes much more effective with habit!)Unsurprisingly, I had approximately 50 outtakes in my camera roll bin, but I didn’t backout of finishing the task I’d started because I was feeling unconfident, coy and embarrassed. 

As small as this step may be, I’m proud that I managed to overcome the metaphorical barrier that once used to hinder me from experiencing new things or ceasing opportunities, which could broaden my knowledge/skill set. My next personal goals are to be more expressive in physical speech, rather than speaking up for myself through writing only. I will find new employment & uptake a creative activity: then after, rewarding myself with temporarily distancing myself from my stress – inducing E-mail inbox (most likely in addition to a slice of New York-Style cheesecake, because why not?). 

Now its your turn. Remember, praising yourself can result in receiving a physical reward – perhaps buying yourself a hearty/delicious meal or new book to read. Alternatively, it could be something as simple as going to sleep early/having a lay-in or taking an hour out of your day to catch up on you favourite TV show or to get back to a once loved hobby.  

Whatever your sign of self-appreciation may be, urge you to practice granting yourself with such things without feeling guilty or unworthy. Whatever you desire, you deserve it. You’ve got this!
