Staying Sane in Isolation
It’s now been – ahem – a while since Boris announced the country-wide lockdown, with the entire of the U.K.’s non-essential workforce suddenly working from home full time.   After the initial giddiness at the prospect of an extra half an hour in bed, not having to battle the rush hour Northern Line twice a day, and a new work wardrobe comprising mainly loungewear and sliders, the reality of the situation settled in.

Fashion Week and It’s Lockdown…

Self-Care and Immunity on Lockdown

For beauty lovers internationally.

On lockdown and in the confines of our own homes, our most-loved beauty and self-care secrets have been compromised and our go-to pick-me-ups are, for now, out the window. Across all nations, people are experiencing sickness and so right now, the notion of beauty may be of a lower priority than usual. For those of us recovering from milder symptoms, feeling the FOMO, anxiety or simply just locked inside for safe measures, we are hoping this soon will be a distant memory. In this time, it’s important to remember the healing powers we can unlock by optimising our inner and outer mental health and immunity.

Beauty, health and vitality are all interlinked. Our skin is our largest organ and so I’m interested to learn what it can tell us a lot about our overall health. By looking after our skin, can we can therefore optimise our overall health? If so, perhaps we could look at this time as an opportunity to get to know and listen to our skin better and a chance to re-invent certain elements of our life. In moments of change, let’s not forget everything is possible.

This time could even be spent investing or turning back the clock, by giving our skin the much needed love it needs; the sleep our skin deserves but doesn’t get when we are on to go 24/7, exercise, which we are still permitted to do inside or out in small doses, which can oxygenate our skin and minds. Beauty beyond aesthetics is a feeling, which both empowers and represents true wellness and so I’m also keen to understand how we can optimise our mental health to get us through this challenging moment in history.

I called upon my good friends, multi-award-winning Doctors, Dr. Rita Rakus and Dr. Galyna to shed some light and insider knowledge on skin, health and immunity for Cohorted Cult. I go to Dr Rita Rakus’ Knightsbridge clinic for red carpet Oxygen, Hydrafacials and skin-health support. She also produces her own skincare brand and I love her unbeatable SPF and Vitamin C serum. Just before lockdown, I was lucky enough to experience one of Dr Rita’s world-renowned bespoke hydra-facials in London, and my skin definitely feeling thankful for this now.

I hope these tips to survive and thrive under the pressure of a global pandemic and bring us all together in our mission to get well soon and feel good.

DR RITA RAKUS – in conversation

ELLE L: What does our skin say about our overall health?

DR RITA: Your skin is the largest organ in your body but it’s also a mirror reflection of any misbalance occurring inside. Dull skin, breaking out, dehydration is mostly due to gut health and diet. Let’s not forget the stress, cortisol, the stress hormone, is well known to deplete existing collagen and cause loose skin.

ELLE L: Can we optimise our health through looking after our skin?

DR RITA: Actually it’s the other way round, looking after your health and immune system will optimise your skin. However, let’s not forget the endorphins and feel good factor that is essential in this turbulent times.

ELLE L: What are your top 3 self – care tips for incubation period?

DR RITA: Hydration! Staying in touch with your loved ones and physical activity!

ELLE L: Do you have go-to supplements or treatment for inner beauty and health?

DR RITA: Vitamin C and Vitamin D are essential.

ELLE L: Can you share with us your top immunity tips?

DR RITA: NAD drip is the strongest known antioxidant which is essential for immune system.  It stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, and it’s a celebrated ‘anti-aging’ molecule naturally present in every cell and essential for life. Our bodies naturally make it, and foods like salmon, sardines and mushrooms, are rich sources.

DR GALYNA – in conversation

ELLE L: Can we improve our skin health in lock-down?

DR GALYNA: Actually self isolation is good timing to start medical grade skin care as we finally have time for few steps and even if there is a little dryness and redness we can blame the video conference! My answer is yes, you can improve skin by introducing active ingredients like Vit C and retinol.

ELLE L: What’s an effective, simplified skincare routine anyone can do?

DR GALYNA: As long as you remember the steps! Cleansing, Exfoliation, Active Serum, Hydration and SPF protection! you are good to go!

ELLE L What’s your current at-home beauty regime?

DR GALYNA: Good skin starts with wellness so I make sure I boost my lymphatic drainage with water, exercise and my favourite-dry brushing. This helps your body to detox and have less breakouts! I also started Obagi CRX system to even up my skin tone

ELLE L: Is there a favourite quote or anyone you look up to that inspires you during difficult times?

DR GALYNA: My mother is my inspiration, she has been self isolating for 3 weeks now… she stays positive and laughs! My own phase for the lockdown is ‘kill virus with love’ 🦠🔫❤

ELLE L: You’re a trained Psychiatrist, what can we do to support our mental health during this time?

DR GALYNA: I offer free psychological support for those struggling with lockdown and current turbu situation, anyone can message me on Instagram. My advice is to find the new routine, meditate and hold on to communication (including virtual) with the ones we love x
