Staying Sane in Isolation
It’s now been – ahem – a while since Boris announced the country-wide lockdown, with the entire of the U.K.’s non-essential workforce suddenly working from home full time.   After the initial giddiness at the prospect of an extra half an hour in bed, not having to battle the rush hour Northern Line twice a day, and a new work wardrobe comprising mainly loungewear and sliders, the reality of the situation settled in.

Why Being Fired Was The Best Thing That Happened To Me

A couple of years ago I was fired from a job that I hated. I didn’t realise it at the time but it was having a huge effect on my mental and physiological health. I became apathetic, uninterested in everything, and well, stress manifests itself in a plethora of ways. Who knew it was work related? And then came one Friday afternoon…

In the moment, the words ‘We’re letting you go’ don’t really sink in until you you’re alone in your room that night trying to fix up your CV with tears falling down your face.

Shaky, confused, hurt. Sometimes you can’t help but take things personally and being told you’re not good enough is enough to make you want to give up entirely. But when things like this happen the flight or fight mode sinks in and you find a way.

Life isn’t all about work.

Work to live or live to work?

You’ll have ups and downs.

There will be moments you’ll be crying in the bath, crying in a coffee shop and trying to suppress the commuter crying. It’s all character building I say. You’ll begin to realise there is a whole world out there for you that doesn’t revolve around the workplace.

What about your own hopes and dreams?

What to do next?

Where you go from there?

Sometimes it’s also important to just be and not make rash decisions.

Life goes on – employment comes and goes. You’ll begin to realise you need to be selfish. Most employers don’t care about you in all honesty, if they wanna cut you they will.

You need to find your happy. Always have a backup or side hustle. Perhaps sell a skill or consult.

It doesn’t have to be a redundancy that shakes your life up… it could be a breakup, a breakdown or something you never saw coming. The universe has a pretty sweet way of bringing you back down to earth. You just need space and time.

A few years later, I can happily say I am content. Being fired was the best thing that happened to me because it taught me resilience, to be selfish and to go after what I want in life.
