A Introduction to Life as a Millennial Mum

When my first daughter Violet was born, my life turned upside down. I thought I was ready for motherhood but honestly, NOTHING can prepare you – the earth shattering, heart stopping moment you are handed that warm, slightly sticky, gooey new bundle to love is quite frankly the most daunting moment of my life, but also the very best moment too. In that one moment, I feel like I stepped out of my old self and became a new person I am today – I was now a mother and I had NO IDEA WHAT TO DO!

Today I’d like to introduce to you to the brand new ‘Life as a Millennial Mum’ column here at Cohorted Cult. Firstly, as I’ll be sharing my life as a mother here, a little about me – I’m Lyndsay, I’m a mum of two girls – Violet who is 2 years old and Pearl who is 1. I’m part of a same-sex family based in Brighton and after a long journey through IVF we conceived our first little girl Violet in 2016. I then threw myself in the deep end of motherhood and became pregnant again when Violet was only 8 months old. Pearl came along on the day of Brighton Pride 2018 so our girls are only 17 months apart and let’s say, having two toddlers is quite a handful, but I’m thankful for our coffee machine for getting me through most days!

So, what is a Millennial Mum? Millennial’s are people born between the mid-80’s to the mid-90’s – we are the first generation to watch digital media and the internet grow, whilst trying to raise children alongside these changes in the way we live.

This basically means we are the Internet’s guinea pigs when it comes to motherhood. Life as millennial Mum is like no other time – we are facing challenges our parents would never have faced – although I enjoy the fact I can google “is my baby feeding enough?” at 2am, I also feel like the constant barrage of information, the Instagram perfect families in matching pajamas (with their Christmas tree up in November) can be damaging to our wellbeing so I hope this new column will be a space we can talk openly and realistically, where Mum buns and slouchy leggings are accepted without a second glance, as that is the kind of conversation and space we need as mothers.

Millennial Motherhood can be all consuming but amazingly wonderful all in one – I’ve never experienced love like it or the desolate worry either. It feels like we always trying to do it all and be it all – from being the perfect mother with a Pinterest board of sensory play and activities to weaning children that eat broccoli without a quibble, whilst managing clean homes, tidy organised cupboards whilst still looking perfect too and honestly – it’s not really that easy. Sometimes I wish we’d take the pressure of ourselves and just admit we’d rather have a day off to watch Netflix once in a while. I hope that you’ll join me in keeping the conversation real and creating a positive, realistic, safe space to chat about all things that make us Mums.
