Stoptober; Can you do it?

It’s not New Year, but October could be the perfect time to make yourself a resolution. I’m talking specifically about quitting smoking. Now, hear me out; this isn’t going to be one of those articles that lectures you until you feel so guilty and stressed that you need a cigarette. Instead, I’m just here to tell you a bit about Stoptober, the Public Health England (PHE) initiative that offers support and resources to encourage quitting smoking, not just for your health but for a tonne of other reasons too.

What’s it all about?

If you’re unfamiliar with Stoptober, this is the perfect place to find out a bit more about it. Studies have shown that if you can resist the urge to light up for just 28 days, you’re 5x more likely to quit forever, so PHE decided that it was time to show some solidarity. Choosing October for their mission, the not-so-cleverly named Stoptober was born. It focuses on the concept of helping you to quit for the month of October; perfectly placed after the summer minefield of pub gardens and barbeques, and before the Christmas stress drives you to your lighter. It’s really the perfect time to focus on you and your health, and can make a great early Christmas pressie for your family too. It’s also free to take part, meaning you’re not having to put yourself out of pocket.

There’s a whole range of free resources available for any smokers looking to take part, and a community of people going through the same experience, which is super supportive and inclusive. Whether you’re looking for a chat on the phone, a Facebook group to join and socialise in, or you just need a good app to keep you on track, you can get access to all of it when you’re involved in Stoptober.

Why should I get involved?

You’re probably well aware of all the health benefits of quitting smoking. You’ll stop losing your breath running up the stairs, you won’t have to worry about the increased risks of scary, fatal diseases and illnesses, and you’ll lengthen your life too. But even if your health doesn’t bother you, there’s a bunch of reasons that quitting smoking is an all-round win.

First off, it’s super expensive, especially since new tax laws came into effect! So, by quitting smoking, you could pay for a lush holiday for ultimate relaxation, or buy yourself the cutest new outfits – maybe even a Cohorted box could be on the horizon now you’ve got some spare dough.

Then there’s the smells and stains of smoking. No longer will you need to worry that you’re carrying a cloud of gross cigarette smoke around with you, and your teeth and skin will naturally lighten and lose its yellow tinges if you take the plunge and give up the cigs. That’ll soon sort your selfies with the best, most winning smile.

Even if none of that convinces you, chances are, you love a challenge. Why not see how good you can really be? Prove to yourself, your mum and dad, your partner or your pals (whoever you really want to impress) that you really can give up smoking, once and for all – or at the very least, for 28 little days. And hey, if October doesn’t work for you, do your own Stoptober and be a true rogue visionary.
